Hohensalzburg Fortress (big one on top of the hill)
Opened: 9am-7pm (last entrance 30min before closing)
Fee: 11.30 EUR with funicular and 8 EUR without. (walk up to the fortress (incl. descent)can be obtained at the “Sperrbogen”

Built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, considerably enlarged by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (1495-1519), largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. The medieval princes' apartments and the Fortress Museum are of particular interest. fortress also served as military barracks and a prison. Since 1892 the fortress can easily be reached by funicular railway departing from the Festungsgasse.

Wander through the cobbled Grain Lane where each store has an old-fashion style shingle and the window fronts are designed to look like they would have looked 100 years ago.

Mirabellgarten
Much of the song 'Do Re Mi'from the Sound of Music was filmed at the Mirabell Palace Gardens, which was designed in the 1600s and again in the 1700s. The Pegasus Fountain dates back to 1913 and the 17th century statues around the fountain represent the four elements. Other features of the gardens include the 18th century Hedge Theatre, the Dwarf Garden and the Orangerie. The gardens are open from 6am to dusk and entrance is free.
