Medieval city in the western Austrian state of Vorarlberg on the border with Switzerland and Liechtenstein ( 5km or 3 miles to the boarder). The old town centre is small, and easy to walk around. Most of the street as pedestrianised. Neat fact – it’s twin city is Whitby, Canada. 

Schattenburg castle (1218)

13th century castle, on a hill to the east of the town is impossible to miss. It was once the seat of the Earls of Montfort. Today there is a local history museum and some restaurants inside.

Cathedral of St. Nikolaus (1478)

Identified by a slender spire, Feldkirch’s cathedral has a large, forbidding interior complemented by late-Gothic features and dazzling stained glass. The painting on the side altar is by local lad Wolf Huber (1480–1539)

Marktgasse. 
This street feels like a proper medieval German street, with its arches and covered walkways.

Katzenturm. 
This defence tower was once part of the towns fortifications. It is believed to be named after the canons (cats) which were kept in the tower.

Churertor

The towers surviving from the old fortifications include the step-gabled Churertor , once the gateway to the bridge that was used to transport salt across the Ill River to Switzerland.

Mühletor
